Coaching

Shane Tainui, Resident Coach

Shane Tainui is half Irish, half Maori and grew up on the sleepy shores of Akaroa. Somehow Shane became a very competitive tennis Player and then a qualified Coach. His playing and coaching skills were sharpened by working for nearly 10 years as a professional player/ coach in the top clubs around Stuttgart, Germany.

Shane’s background ensures that every coaching session is fun and encouraging.

But Shane also brings a very trained eye that can develop players to Division 1 level.

For a few weeks, during the New Zealand winter, Shane returns to Stuttgart in Germany, where he is a guest professional coach/player. He uses this period to learn new coaching techniques and bring these back to Avonhead.

Sport Canterbury awarded Shane the Summer Sports Awards for Tennis Coaching in 2007

Junior Group Coaching

Every Junior (and under10) club member, as part of the membership fee is offered 4 or 5 sessions (of 45mins) of coaching, personally by Shane. If funding is available (at it usually is) a further 4 or 5 sessions of coaching, after Christmas, is also offered. Few tennis clubs can match this!

The groups are small, after school, and are a valuable workshop for improvement and interclub play.  The child does not need to play competitively and Shane organises the children according to their abilities.

The emphasis, for the younger players, is on fun and the children look forward to the training sessions.

Shane also coaches at several schools and any school or other organisation is invited to contact him.

Adults interested in trying tennis as a new recreation

Canterbury Tennis sponsors a scheme called ‘Easi Tennis’. Shane participates in this scheme.

The coaching is gentle, paced as slow as you would like, and always fun.

The Easi-Tennis course consists of six, one and a half hour lessons in a small group and is especially designed for those who want to play for the first time or former players keen to return to tennis after a long break.

Participants in the course are quickly confident enough to have a game with their children or friends.

Shane can introduce you to club members and arrange for a gentle introduction to club tennis.

Private Coaching

You can arrange coaching lessons on the Avonhead courts or your own court.

These lessons could be one-on-one or as a family group.

Shane can arrange coaching for most days of the week and as Avonhead has lights, coaching can occur in the evenings.

Why not hire Shane for a

at a business seminar?
